Registered children's homes
The Moorings
The Moorings is a three-bedded children’s home, with an additional six-week respite and emergency bed, run by The Boulters Ltd. for children with emotional and behavioural problems. The Moorings is situated in the small village of Conyer, one and a half miles from Teynham village off the old A2 road between Sittingbourne and Faversham in Kent.
The house is a link detached house set in the middle of the village. The house looks the same as the other houses in the road in line with the organisations’ policy of being part of the local community and not ‘standing out’.
Most young people who have stayed at The Moorings have said that they have had positive experiences. Some comments from past residents are included in the children’s guide. A copy is available on request. The Moorings is one of three children’s homes run by ‘The Boulters’ Ltd.
Accommodation
The Moorings can be flexible in the nature of accommodation provided.
Two bedrooms for young people are located on a landing alongside the bathroom and the staff sleeping in accommodation. This arrangement lends itself to a high level of supervision at night time should this be necessary. Additionally, the bedroom doors can be alarmed, if required, as part of the care plan.
A third bedroom is accessed through its own stairway and is at the opposite end of the downstairs hallway.
The third bedroom is en-suite and has its own sitting room. This accommodation has been put to a range of functions such as preparation for independent living, close supervision of vulnerable children and those with special needs and for the purpose of assessment.
The Moorings has sky television and all bedrooms are equipped with their own television, DVD/video and music centre.
The Moorings also provides a six week emergency or respite bed. CSCI have been flexible in the past in granting extensions to this period when this serves the needs of the young person accommodated.
The downstairs accommodation – lounge, dining room and kitchen - is furnished to a high standard, a point acknowledged both by past residents and Inspectors.
Young people are encouraged to personalise their rooms. They are encouraged to take responsibility for their room and, with others, for their home.
Care provided
Young people placed at The Moorings enjoy a high staffing ratio. There is always two staff on duty for a maximum of four young people. This staffing ratio can be increased, where appropriate and where agreed, as part of a care plan. The Manager is supernumerary with someone on call at all times.
At The Moorings, young people are encouraged to participate in every way in making decisions that affect them and their lives. They are encouraged to read and make comment on all records held on them whilst at The Moorings through our open access policy and are also encouraged, through key work and residents’ meetings, to decide menus activities, holidays etc.
Young people are invited to contribute to regular six weekly reports and review reports. Preparation is undertaken with each young person to ensure they have the confidence to put forward their views to social workers, parents and other adults involved in planning their lives.
The Moorings operates a key worker system. Individual time and attention is given to help young people to reintegrate into school and to maintain their hobbies and interests. The home aims to help young people to understand their feelings and behaviours and to find more positive and appropriate ways of solving problems and managing their feelings. Young people are assisted to consider how they relate to others and to build more productive relationships. Each young person has an individual placement plan with risk assessments to cover known behaviours and activities.
Young people receive a generous clothing and pocket money allowance which they are encouraged to save and budget.
